Maxims, rules of thumb and other observations on human cognition and sociocultural affectations

This will be added to on an irregular basis...
  • What is said to humans directly is received with skepticism and considered with dubiousness while that which is heard in passing, especially that which most conforms to their mentality or prejudices, is readily believed.
  • Humans have a certain cognitive latency between exposure to new information or experiences and the ability to think dispassionately and intellectually about it.
  • Humans have a certain cognitive spectrum starting with the moment of exposure to new information or experiences and ending with some point at which the thing is effectively "in the past" for them.
  • This cognitive spectrum is linked to the emotional process often referred to as shock, anger, denial and acceptance.
  • The more and faster information or experiences are presented to people and the closer the quarters and the lesser the distance between people, the more their early reactions in the passionate emotional stage are reflected back to them in the manner of responses to those reactions from others in light of those responses.
  • The more outrages which are suffered without sufficient time to allow emotional bleed-off, the farther the bar for subsequent reaction and outrage are pushed, and the more further events must progress before reaction and outrage.
  • It is possible for serious detriments to eventually sit below this threshold for long enough for their damaging effects to build and multiply until their entire society undergoes some reactive convulsion.

What the fuck is going on with our Sci-Future outlook?

I will call this Sci-Fu for the time being since I can't think of anything better at the moment.

Have you seen the Science Channel, formerly known as the Discovery Science Channel? Of late, the space related shows are beyond pathetic in ways that make me want to throw a large heavy object at my television in sheer rage for the sensationalistic selling of deflated hopes and shattered dreams.

Eddie Izzard had this joke in his Dressed to Kill concert about wanting to be an astronaut and the counselor saying "you're British, so scale that back". Evidently our outlook on space exploration is not much different than that.

I remember when flying cars were going to be all the rage. Well, we have the engineering know-how. The design and drawing board antecedent to the Harrier, the Gyroptere, would easily have worked. It took a lot of engineering to make it into a militarily useful result, but as it was, it would have taken off and flown. See the section entitled "The vectored thrust story" at the above link.

The problem is that very few people have a good rational idea of what the gross goal of such a craft is beyond taking off and flying. In the military, there would be immediate questions about armament carriage capabilities, but they're regimented to think clearly and logically. In the civilian world, it is strangely not at all obvious to people that it must carry the average car's cargo of people and goods from one populated place to another and do it safely and cheaply.

Whatever.

I also remember when we were going to build orbital space stations at various points including LEO, HEO, and the Lagrange points, especially L4 and L5. We'd make structures out of wire and tubes which would be set spinning and we'd add on to them, eventually pressurizing and finishing their insides and finally occupying them.

Doing it is not difficult. A few nuclear reactors dedicated to electrolysis of ocean water would produce all the hydrogen and oxygen required as well as provide the extra side benefits of sellable salts and metals which are dissolved in ocean waters. Excess purified water would also of course be available to the surrounding area. If built near the equator for maximum efficiency of launch, it would most likely mean very good benefits in materials, water, and electricity for some currently needy third world nations.

It never happened of course. We were too short sighted and too wrapped up in ourselves. That goes for, especially for, the global left, which in their arrogant and egomaniacal thirst for and addiction to attention and power turned their back on the idea of global pan-human prosperity being compatible with and indeed going hand-in-hand with the betterment and stewardship of the Earth's biological environment.

So we turned off the lights in the more pleasant and optimistic areas of our dreams and went back cynically to the place we facetiously and insincerely refer to as "the real world". The world is what we make it and we set about making it dark and depressing. Those school children who came after me were treated not to talk of space travel and optimism, but how bad rich straight white Christian Republican men were making the world and if we only just lived simply, others would simply live.

The "real world" is a fiction and we all know that later on though, don't we? It has nothing to do with "reality" which is a wholly separate thing. Reality is that the statement that "no man is an island" is true on so many levels that you should not require a viewing of How It's Made to know it. It should be obvious. Like the previous bit regarding flying cars, it infuriatingly continues not to be obvious, to the people who have the least reason for oblivious ignorance.

We know very well intellectually that neither simple living is required nor should simply living be accepted. Unless you truly and seriously like living by lowered expectations, you have no obligation to. None of us do. In fact, there's plenty of room in the universe for a very prosperous and wealthy mankind where none of us goes hungry or wants for much of anything in the material sense. Do we show that we are striving for such a thing?

Not in the current crop of space exploration science shows we don't. I've been watching lately and what I see more often than anything else is a pastiche of ill thought out, depressingly limited, utterly uninformed, and completely uninspiring shit which is not and cannot be acceptable. While I have not yet had kids despite much trying, I believe that in the long temporal view you always were whatever you wanted to be, just not when you did and changing that is usually as simple as choosing. Therefore, would I be happy selling this crap to my kids?

FUCK NO.

Honesty and integrity demand that we are realistic regarding our tendencies, NOT THAT WE MUST BOW BEFORE THEM, much less portray our likely or even hoped for futures by them. There is a big difference people. A big difference. I know that reality is that if there's a way government and other human hierarchical organizations screw something up with the simplest foibles of humanity, they will try damned hard without said outcome actually being the pre-chosen mission. In other words, shit happens while you're making other plans.

This does not mean however that you should hobble your plans in accordance. If you know you will fall short, do not aim short, for you will fall even shorter. If you mean to make Mars, aim for Jupiter. If you mean to make the moon, aim for Mars. It's not a hard concept to grasp.

Instead, we do something constantly that Eddie Izzard only thought he was joking about. We scale it back.

Odex Functionoid  To the left is a picture of the Odetics Odex One. Also known as the Odex Functionoid. Care to guess when this was unveiled to the public? Try twenty-five years ago.

Have you seen the Mars rovers? Go look them up. Now go look at what kids are playing with at the park in the summer for R/C vehicles. Look familiar?

We've retreated to using vehicles worthy of being called toys and with a completely straight face we've claimed otherwise. We spent millions on these things and to beat engineering challenges almost entirely worked out more than forty years ago during the heyday of space exploration enthusiasm.

In that last sentence you see what is missing. We no longer have enthusiasm. We've become cynical and stopped believing not only that we can, but that we should try to do better. We treat marriage like a convenience, obligations like dodges, and each other as disposable. We definitely don't have warm fuzzy feelings for seeing our neighbors happy in their new home on a space colony, OR EVEN OURSELVES.

I deserve to travel to the moon, to Mars, and the stars. It is my birthright as a member of the single most intelligent species on Earth and in this star system. A species which can conceive of better places if not so easily the way to get there. A species which can overcome gigantic obstacles, even if it is to do stupid things so often. I know we can travel to space and do it en masse and in style.

I do not know that it must be so retarded in scope and grandeur. I know no such thing. I will actively seek to remain oblivious and ignorant of that. I believe in better, and I believe the time has come for us all to believe.

German courts to Rapidshare: stop copyright infringement before it happens!

Court orders Rapidshare to take preemptive measures against copyright infringement

Exactly how do you do that?* Is that new Temporal Addressing technology in TCP/IP version 19 ready? Will the Psychic Friends Network help? Is John Edwards going to use the dead to put a hit out on pirates?

Given the sheer volume of German fetish porn hosted on Rapidshare, and the rapid removal of same from there after posting, I can only guess that it is the German porn industry pushing this. I am in awe of the power wielded by people who think women wearing latex and shitting on each others' faces is art.

Oh well... the distributed coalescent net is coming... Bring it on dummkopfs, all you do is merely hastening the storm of the static leveling...

*You make sure no content produced is worth pirating. American television and movie execs have been working hard to do this for over forty years and trust me, they're getting closer every year.

Liberian ex-rebel confesses to killings - Yahoo News

One of Liberia's most notorious rebel commanders, known as Gen. Butt Naked for charging into battle wearing only boots, has returned to confess his role in terrorizing the nation, saying he is responsible for 20,000 deaths.

Butt wait, it gets better:

His nom de guerre is derived from his platoon's practice of charging naked into battle, a technique meant to terrify the enemy.

I usually think, "oh good, no body armor, shoot 'em anywhere" but maybe that's just me. "What is your major malfunction Private Fatbody?! Don't you want to look good on the field with a nice tight ass and washboard abs as you run naked into a VC platoon?!"

So there's your thankful thought of the day, that Full Metal Jacket wasn't recording this sort of thing.

If you wonder why humanity got the fuck away from its cradle...

The civil war, which killed an estimated 250,000 people in this nation of 3 million, was characterized by the eating of human hearts and soccer matches played with human skulls. Drugged fighters waltzed into battle wearing women's wigs, flowing gowns and carrying dainty purses stolen from civilians.

Eddie Izzard only thought he was being funny with his joke about the First Transvestite Airborne Brigade.

Not enough? Motley Crue, all you 80s rockers using satanic imagery, EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT:

Before he led his fighters into battle, wearing only a pair of lace-up boots, Blahyi said he made a human sacrifice to the devil.

If there's anywhere that needs massive human aid shipments of date rape drugs, non-violent seduction methods, and maybe some books on incest as a viable alternative it's this place:

Because the violence was so widespread it's not uncommon to find Liberian families that have both victim and perpetrator under the same roof — a daughter who was raped and a son who took up a gun and went on to rape the daughters of other families.

Holy fucking shitballs, Africa knows how to party down and by party down I mean a definition of party from some weird Cenobite controlled alternate reality.

THIS is a perfect example of why neither the rest of the world nor the Africans themselves have any idea how to fix that continent. It is often so far removed from the things we think are atrocities we cannot conceive of the depths of human sadism that go on and yet are completely normal and human, when humans let go of anything approaching rational altruistic thought AND we insist that people there can't think like everyone else does, and everyone else includes all of their descendant relatives around the world from Europe to America whether close such as African-Americans or far removed like everyone else. How inhumane and unsupportive can we be to write off people and say they are incapable of doing better?

You multicultural morons who want to discourse on different cultures bringing different mores, shut the fuck up.

The African peoples can do better. We know they can. THAT is why it is so shocking. Deep down we know these are no different people than us. And that scares the fuck out of us. This is Lord of the Flies sucks off Hostel butt fuck slammed into Dawn of the Dead. This is what happens when you strip the trappings we wear wrapped around our psyches like security blankets away. We could all be charging into battle naked after sacrificing people to the devil and relaxing later with a nice game of pick-up soccer using someone's severed head.

I guess in a weird way as bad as the Armenian Genocide, Holocaust, and Balkan Slaughters were, they could have been worse. EASILY.

G-d bless and keep the people of Africa and take care of our forbear relatives and keep them safely far far away from our patronizing lack of encouragement. It seems we've only influenced the place straight into lunatic barbarism they didn't practice on this level before the outside world began tampering with them.*

I leave you with this quote from Lord of War which didn't even touch the surface:

Monrovia itself, was like being on another planet... Planet Monrovia... from the temperature it was obviously a planet close to the sun. I rarely saw another white man and I never left town alone. Outside town was the edge of hell. I didn't even wanna gaze into it.

*Cold-war proxy fights, colonial era conquest, UN meddling for political purposes, theft of African hopes to be on the same stage as the USA and Europe, lack of real and true international improvement and development funds going towards projects native Africans would like to do and build, you name it, we've screwed the place.

Microsoft seeks patent for office 'spy' software - Times Online

Microsoft is developing Big Brother-style software capable of remotely monitoring a worker’s productivity, physical wellbeing and competence.

The Times has seen a patent application filed by the company for a computer system that links workers to their computers via wireless sensors that measure their metabolism. The system would allow managers to monitor employees’ performance by measuring their heart rate, body temperature, movement, facial expression and blood pressure. Unions said they fear that employees could be dismissed on the basis of a computer’s assessment of their physiological state.

Also, note the very nearly free advertising link for the new Macintosh laptop right at the top of the article! Negative Microsoft article? Perfect place to promote Apple at the same time! Opportunistic bastards...

One wonders if there will be enough room up the worker's asses to install the monitoring equipment given that it must compete with the already present heads and boots of their management. Oh wait, management keeps their heads up their own assess... I keep forgetting that.

Also, Steve Jobs is pictured serving his own smiling severed head to his loyal cultists.

Global warming kills through cold?

Girl, 8, dies of hypothermia in Negev | Jerusalem Post

The girl, from one of the Bedouin villages in the area, is the fifth to die this week as a result of the unusually cold weather.

Yes, the cold in Israel and the surrounding region is that bad. People who don't usually dress in anything more insulating than a few layers of thin woven fabrics are getting cold enough to die.

With respect to the global warming controversy, this should point up exactly how shallow, superficial, and naively simplistic the thinking of the Chicken Little crowd is.

Allow me to repeat something: as the Earth gets warmer as it heads out of a glacial period, ice retreats and since nature abhors a vacuum as they say, plant life grows in hard on the glaciers' heels. As plant life takes root where once ice covered the land, it dies, decomposes, and the plethora of microbial life on Earth which handles that release methane, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other things from the organic materials.

Human and other mammalian life thrives in warmer times as the region that can support them increases dramatically from the dead of the glacial period. They fart methane among other things, they defecate and urinate and those wastes add to the decomposition gas output. Did you think all our septic treatment plants didn't have to put the poop somewhere to compost?

Or they burn it and carbon dioxide is output.

The Earth continues to get warmer. Whether or not we have fossil fuels. Ice has happened before, it will happen again, and mankind's extra output may be the only thing that staves off that ice for any time, but don't count on it. As long as the continents remain in their current arrangement allowing the global ocean circulatory patterns we have, as well as their interaction with the air currents above, we will likely keep going back and forth between deep freeze and somewhat warm.

Ongoing home refit, the ideas continue...

I looked over the joists in my first floor this weekend and there's a few things to take into account.

  1. The western beam is broken at the chimney. Instead of one solid beam all the way across, there are two shorter beams each resting on the chimney as a brick post. I don't want that as I intend to remove the chimney and rebuild it and thus I would need at least two columns on either side to take its place. If I look down between the chimney and the attic floor, nothing is making contact with the chimney above that point. Open shot straight up.
  2. There are several joists over the southwest section broken just before the southwestern beam. If I had to put money down, I'd almost be certain there used to be a stairway there many decades ago and the floors redone to eliminate it.
  3. The breakpoint of the joists of the southeast for the present stairway is not done as I would prefer. Since stairwells tend to have upwardly contiguous wall plans, you want a corner of the stairwell rectangle supported under the beams.
  4. The bowing of the floors is as expected uneven and in odd places not in the exact center of the floor making straightening them a little harder.

So here's what needs to be done:

  1. The western beam needs two columns, one either side of the chimney pillar, and furthermore should have a 2x12 beam sistered to it on the side facing out to prevent lateral deflection of any kind, even though the dead weight on it from above pretty much rules it out.
  2. The joists that are broken are unfortunately meeting at a block going across their ends and continue from there on the other side with short sections. This pretty much prevents proper sistering as if that cross section is removed, there's a two inch gap to cross and sistering will be of little use unless the sister beam is essentially bonded like a composite with glue and bolted on top of it and even then it is questionable. I will probably put a section of double 2x12 beams across on columns underneath that point permanently.
  3. The rear stairwell needs to be better supported and that taken into account when doing the jacking.
  4. I have to clear a lot more of the cellar to get the whole process started.

That's just the first floor, not the second, which will have to wait until the first is taken care of and totally ready. Mind you, all this needs to be done while I am still living there with my family and pets. NOT unoccupied. To say nothing of redoing the outside of the house.

Banks and FBI, your money in action!

Action as in: Armored Car Guard Impostor Robs Bank - News Story - WRC | Washington

The bank is across the street from the J. Edgar Hoover FBI building. The FBI is investigating.

Authorities don't have a detailed description of the robber and don't know whether he left the bank in a vehicle or on foot.

First, bravo to the thief. No threats, no violence, walk in and let the other person's dimbulb assumptions work in your favor.

Second, what the fuck is going on with the FBI? Going on seven years after September 11, 2001 and they don't have surveillance around the JEH building?! What?!

We feel so much safer now.

Global warming must be real. It's getting colder in the Middle East. Wait, that's not how it works...

Snow falls on Baghdad for first time in memory | U.S. | Reuters

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Snow fell on Baghdad on Friday for the first time in memory, and delighted residents declared it an omen of peace.

"It is the first time we've seen snow in Baghdad," said 60-year-old Hassan Zahar. "We've seen sleet before, but never snow. I looked at the faces of all the people, they were astonished," he said.

Above emphasis is mine.

WAKE UP AMERICA! The people of Iraq, invaded and bombed in the name of uprooting their previous tyranny, see SNOW as a sign of peace. If YOU were in daily danger of random kidnappings and murders, gunfire and terrorist bombs in the street, would you see snow as a sign of peace?

Not even if you were from Pepperidge Farms' marketing department.

You lack the perspective and hopefulness of Iraqis. How screwed up can you be?

Newspeak continues...

New rules on licenses pit states against feds - CNN.com

"The last thing I want to do is punish citizens of a state who would love to have a REAL ID license but can't get one," Chertoff said. "But in the end, the rule is the rule as passed by Congress."

There are three implications in this statement there in one sentence.

1. There is an implicit assumption that the citizens love this big brother shit and want to have the DoHS blessed number of the beast card if it wasn't for their in-the-way stick-in-the-mud disloyal state governments. This is in my mind similar to the Soviet claim that the people of Prague wanted the invasion of Czechoslovakia to free them from their bourgeois heretic government.

2. There is an implicit assumption that the government has a right to force this on the states when in fact it in no way shape or form does, as it amounts to circumventing constitutional legal history not to mention American tradition by turning state driver's licenses into national ID cards.

3. Then there is the implicit threat of punishment of the people of the states if the states do not capitulate. Either overthrow your recalcitrant governments at the polls, or we will break you seems to be the long term message.

4. There's actually a fourth implication of extreme arrogance on Chertoff's part as it implies he believes he either has the right to punish the states, and the usual governmental cowardice of blaming congress.

It's like a wife beater saying to his wife as the blows land, "you made me do this! I didn't want to do this, but you made me! Why couldn't you just do what I told you!"

Of course, despite all this, systems, aka people, will continue to slip through their fingers. Despite massive security procedures, we and the Soviet Union freely spied on each other and compromised the allegiances of each others' citizens almost at will all through the worst times of the Cold War.

Do they really think that this will stop terrorists? No, because that is not the point. The point is that your rulers, the people you the lazy ass common people negligently put into power at the polls DO NOT TRUST YOU. They live in insecurity and rule by fear. They sell you hopelessness, you distribute it like crack dealers. They tell you can'ts and won'ts and you believe them. It's at the point you could have the secret truth of extraterrestrial life given to you by an Air Force defector and you'd simply not care. Similarly, you can see for yourself that your political class sells you solutions to nonexistent problems for no reason other than to entrench and reinforce their power.

If you want just and righteous rulers, you must first rule yourself. Stop running from the world people. Wake up and take control of yourselves. Before the global civil wars come. You're living a self-fulfilling prophecy which ends terribly. Please, stop. Come back to reality. The world isn't that bad, things aren't so negative, there's hope for you and yours. All you have to do is get a fucking grip.

AT&T and the rest of the Internet carriers JUST DON'T GET IT.

Maybe this will help:

AT&T and Other I.S.P.s May Be Getting Ready to Filter - Bits - Technology - New York Times Blog

Encrypted filed sharing systems immune to such packet filtering other than to block them because the ISP can't figure out what they are already exist and will continue to expand and evolve. Steganographic techniques to alleviate that problem by making them look like normal allowed traffic will be used. Encryption, deception, misdirection, and just plain shiftiness will become the average netizen's every day experience and modus operandi.

HOWEVER, the average American is totally unaware of how to do these things without goodly study online of the techniques now available, and the present complexities make it not worth while. So how do you reconcile the two facts? Simple. Just as Internet usage at the dawn of the transition from DARPANET to Internet was complex and required technical skill and no longer does, so too will the techie geeks conquer these usability issues and make it as easy as point, double-click, done.

Right now, use of encrypting hard drive controllers and boot loaders is a bit beyond even the otherwise very thorough terrorists of Al Queda. In a few years, thanks to the government and big business, politics and influence, and the paranoia which drives and governs them so often, such things will come with the machine when you buy it. Enter your set-up passwords and there you go. Everything encrypted in multiple layers making the ultimate breaking of captured data take longer than the Earth has left before the Sun enters its red giant phase.

EVERYONE WILL BY DEFAULT HAVE ALL DATA ENCRYPTED AT ALL TIMES WHETHER ON MEDIA OR TRANSMITTED ACROSS NETWORKS. THE VERY SOFTWARE VIEWERS THEY USE WILL NEVER LEAVE THE DATA IN ANY UNENCRYPTED FORMAT AT ALL WHERE IT CAN BE CAPTURED.

Just as the proliferation of viruses and spyware has resulted in a large industry of point and click anti-virus solutions causing computers to be vastly more secured today than they were in the past, so too will these continuing encroachments on the privacy of the populace drive a defensive response by the people towards embracing hiding their data no matter what it is.

If you think getting at hidden and encrypted data is hard for law enforcement now, wait till they can't tell a recipe from a communication to bomb a government facility. The very government which used fear of that very eventuality as an excuse to infringe our rights will be one third of the reason that in the future their problems become multiplied beyond exponentially.

The second third will be the cretins of AT&T, the RIAA and MPAA, and our law industry all of whom are either living in fear of lawsuits, or living in slathering anticipation of lawsuits.

The final third will be the people themselves who are simultaneously too stupid to realize what venal, dishonest, unprincipled, unethical, immoral weasels they've put in power in both government and business, and too stupid to stop them from passing whatever laws and colluding to create whatever agreements they feel best for their own selfish interests.

Never mind too stupid to stop selling themselves and each other crushing hopelessness that they seek to fill with never ending gluttony for senseless, mindless, vacuous shit that passes for entertainment.

On come the cyber wars and the static leveling.
